Land Rover & Range Rover Repair in San Mateo — Documented Work, Not Promises

The Evoque A/C jobs on this page are ours — filmed and photographed in our bay, down to the TSB number.

Air suspension, A/C, timing chain checks on the 5.0 V8 and the Evoque 2.0, fluids the schedules skip. Photos of any finding to your phone before any quote.

Rated 4.8 / 5 on Google (110 reviews)

Land Rovers reward a shop that diagnoses before it quotes, because the brand's classic symptoms each have a cheap cause and an expensive one. Weak A/C on a 2012–2016 Evoque is usually a weeping service-port valve core (Land Rover's own TSB LTB00955NAS2) — about $150 — not the compressor someone else might quote. A truck that sits low overnight is often one air spring, not the whole suspension. Beacon Auto Care in San Mateo tests first, photographs what it finds, and sends the itemized quote to your phone before any work.

We service the common Bay Area Rover mix — Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, Evoque, Discovery and Discovery Sport, LR4. The brand-card summary lives on the European auto repair page; this page is the deeper version with the documented jobs.

  • Documented Rover work — the A/C valve job and clutch diagnostic below are ours
  • Manufacturer-specific scanning — air suspension, drivetrain and body modules, live data
  • OEM-equivalent parts and spec-matched fluids
  • Magnuson-Moss compliant — your factory warranty stays intact
  • Photo-quote before any work — every finding sent to your phone

Land Rover & Range Rover Failure Modes We See

Each platform has its textbook issues. If your symptom matches one, we confirm it with a test — not a guess — before quoting.

A/C service-port valve

Evoque slow leak — TSB LTB00955NAS2

2012–2016 Evoques lose refrigerant slowly through the service-port valve cores — cold air fades over weeks, not overnight. Land Rover acknowledged it in a TSB. We documented the repair frame by frame: vacuum test held, pressure test caught the weep, valve core fixed it for about $150. See the job →

A/C compressor clutch

Intermittent cold, then none

A separate failure from the valve leak: the clutch that couples the compressor stops engaging — cold air comes and goes at idle, then quits. We filmed one of these diagnostics on an Evoque in our bay (video below). When the clutch or its bearing has burned, replacement is the fix; when it's electrical, it's a much smaller job.

Air suspension

Springs fatigue, compressor follows

The air springs flex at the same fold points for years and develop fatigue cracks; the compressor's piston seal wears until it runs constantly without building pressure. The symptom tells the story — slow overnight sag points at a spring or valve seep, a fast-dropping corner is a bigger leak. Fix the spring early or it takes the compressor with it.

5.0 V8 timing chain guides

2010–2012 AJ133, esp. supercharged

The early 5.0's chain guides wear against the steel tensioner piston, the chain picks up slack, and you get cold-start rattle plus cam-correlation codes (P0016–P0019). 2013-and-later engines got revised guides. On an early car we scan and listen before anyone talks about an engine-out repair — early guide wear caught in time is a fraction of the catastrophic version.

Evoque / Disco Sport 2.0 chain

Tensioner slack, cold-start rattle

The 2.0's tensioner can let slack into the timing chain earlier than you'd expect — commonly reported in the 50–80k range — and a rattle on cold start is the tell. Oil quality and interval are the biggest lever. If yours rattles for a second on startup, that's a listen-and-scan visit, not a wait-and-see.

Cooling & driveline fluids

Coolant pump, diffs, transfer case

Coolant pumps wear at the plastic impeller — a low-coolant warning or slow warm-up is the tell. And the front and rear differentials plus the transfer case carry fluid most service schedules skip; running them dry is how a quiet truck gets a driveline whine. We service all three to spec.

Evoque Compressor-Clutch Diagnostic — Real Footage

From our bay: the compressor clutch on a Range Rover Evoque not engaging during diagnosis. This is the point where a lesser diagnosis quotes a compressor — and ours kept testing.

What a Range Rover Owner Said

"A/C was broke on my Range Rover. And we are expecting heat this weekend. […] Car is fixed. My a/c is ice cold right on time for 90 temps this week. […] They even texted me a video of the broken or malfunctioning area. That was great! Never had that anywhere. Not even at the dealership."

Buying a used Range Rover?

The used-Rover question is really a checklist: air-spring condition, compressor run time, chain noise on a cold start (5.0 and Evoque 2.0 alike), cooling system, and the fluid services the last owner probably skipped. Our pre-purchase inspection runs exactly that, with photos — before you wire anyone money.

Got a Dealer Estimate for Your Land Rover?

Bring it in. We walk it line by line — labor, parts choice, OEM vs OEM-equivalent — and tell you straight which lines are reasonable and which are markup. Typically 20–40% under dealer pricing on the same job, and the second-opinion service covers diagnosis review specifically.

Common Questions About Land Rover Service in San Mateo

Air suspension, timing chains, A/C, warranty, pricing.

My Range Rover sits low in the morning — is that the compressor or a strut?

The symptom pattern usually tells us before we even put it on the lift. A slow overnight drop points at a small sustained leak — typically a fatigue crack in an air-spring bladder (they flex at the same fold points for years) or a valve-block seal. A corner that visibly drops within minutes of parking is a bigger spring leak. And a compressor that runs constantly but can't raise the truck has worn its internal piston seal. The order matters: a leaking spring overworks the compressor, so fixing the spring late often means buying a compressor too. We pressure-test and tell you which one it actually is.

Should I worry about the timing chain on a 5.0 V8 Range Rover?

On the 2010–2012 5.0 (the AJ133, especially supercharged), yes — it's the engine's textbook issue. The early timing chain guides wear against the steel tensioner piston, the chain picks up slack, and the first signs are a cold-start rattle and camshaft-correlation fault codes (P0016–P0019). 2013-and-later engines got revised guides and hold up much better. If yours is an early car, the right move is a scan plus a listen before anyone quotes an engine-out job — catching guide wear early is the difference between a big repair and a catastrophic one.

My Evoque's A/C got weak over a few months — compressor?

Not so fast. The 2012–2016 Evoque has a known slow-leak point at the A/C service-port valve cores — Land Rover acknowledged it in TSB LTB00955NAS2 — and the symptom is exactly that: gradually weaker cold air over weeks or months. We documented one of these in the bay: the vacuum-hold test passed, but under operating pressure the low-side valve stem was weeping refrigerant. The fix was a valve core, around $150 — not a compressor. The four-frame story is on the A/C leak page. A compressor clutch that stops engaging is a separate failure — we filmed one of those diagnostics too.

What do you scan Land Rovers with?

Our Autel platform reads the manufacturer-specific modules and fault codes Land Rovers report — air suspension, drivetrain, body modules — well past what a generic OBD-II reader sees, with live data for the diagnostics that need it. Findings get photographed and the quote lands on your phone before any work.

Will independent service void my Land Rover factory warranty?

No. The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act stops a manufacturer from voiding warranty over independent service, as long as parts and fluids meet spec and records exist. We meet both — spec-matched oil and fluids, OEM-equivalent parts, and every job's photos plus the line-itemized invoice on your phone.

Do you actually see Land Rovers, or is this just a search page?

The work on this page is ours. The Evoque service-port valve repair is documented frame by frame, the compressor-clutch diagnostic is on video from our bay, and the Range Rover A/C review quoted below is a real Google review from May 2026. Rovers come through for A/C, suspension, oil service, and the pre-purchase inspections people ask for before buying a used one.
