About Beacon Auto Care — Family-Run Auto Repair in San Mateo, CA
Photo-and-quote pricing. Family-run by Moe, Favio, and Hisham.
An Auto Repair Shop Where You Don't Get the Runaround
Most shops tell you what they did — after they did it. We do the opposite. Every car gets a digital inspection with photos sent to your phone before any work starts. You see exactly what's wrong, you pick what gets fixed, and the bill matches the estimate.
"We're not good at sales — we're good at finding and fixing problems with your car." — Moe, Owner
Our promise, in three words: Transparency You Can See.
The system that makes it possible is Tekmetric Digital Vehicle Inspections (DVI). Every job comes with photos, notes, and an itemized estimate texted to your phone. Tap the items you want done. Decline the rest. No phone tag, no upsell scripts, no surprise line items at pickup.
Who runs the shop
They've been at 2300 S El Camino Real since July 2020, and the shop is family-run by design: small enough that you'll talk to the same small team every visit (Moe at the counter, Favio and Hisham in the bay), big enough to handle anything from a quick oil change to a full engine tear-down.
Outside the shop: Moe takes his classic car around the Peninsula with the family on weekends. Favio rides the Bay Trail — the Peninsula stretch from Burlingame through Foster City and Redwood Shores down to Redwood City. Same stretch most of our customers drive every day. They live on these roads. They get why your car matters.
What we handle
From routine oil changes and brake jobs to the harder stuff — intermittent electrical faults, transmission shudders, stubborn check-engine codes, A/C systems that won't hold pressure. We also handle tires — mounting, balancing, rotation, and sales. We work on most makes and model years: domestic, European, and hybrid.
Makes we service regularly:

- · Most others — call to ask
Don't see your make? Call us. If we don't service it, we'll tell you straight and recommend who does.
Need it fixed where you are? Moe sometimes runs mobile mechanic jobs for customers who can't bring the car in — call us if that's your situation and we'll see what we can do.
About the bill — why the quote is the bill
We quote labor by the industry's published standard hours — the same database BMW, Audi, Toyota, and the dealerships use to estimate any given job. Tekmetric pulls the right numbers for your year/make/model automatically. Those numbers assume a perfect, garage-kept car.
Yours drove the 101 yesterday. Bay Area roads, weather, age, miles, the years a previous owner skipped a service — all of that adds time to the actual work. A bolt that backs out in 30 seconds on a 2024 BMW takes 20 minutes on a 2008. Sometimes more.
When the job runs longer than the standard hours, that's on us. The bill matches the quote. Always. The only way the bill goes up is if we find a separate issue and you tap-approve the fix.
When the repair is more than you can do right now
Sometimes the inspection comes back with a number that's bigger than your week. We've sat across the counter from people in that exact spot. Here's how we handle it:
- We'll triage what's actually unsafe vs what can wait. Worn pads with metal-on-metal: this week. Slow oil seep at the valve cover: probably next paycheck is fine. We'll tell you which is which, in plain language, with the photo in front of you.
- You can decline anything. Tap-to-approve means tap-to-decline too. Skipping a recommendation is your call, not ours. Whatever you decline goes on your file — next visit, we remind you it's still pending. No surprise breakdown six months later.
- We'll quote a phased fix when it makes sense. $1,400 of recommendations doesn't have to happen on one visit. Brakes today, struts in 60 days, transmission service at the next oil change. Not every shop will lay it out that way, because spreading work means a smaller invoice today.
- If the car isn't worth the repair, we'll tell you. A $3,500 transmission on a car that books at $2,800 is a hard conversation, but we'd rather have it than take your money. Sometimes the math says trade it. We'll say it.
- Affirm and Snap Finance — coming soon. Owner is in the middle of merchant signup. When it's live, you'll be able to split a larger repair across pay-over-time installments straight from the AutoFlow estimate. Until then, ask Moe at the counter — he'll work with you on timing.
No judgment, no pressure to do more than you came in for. We've turned down work plenty of times — that's part of running the shop the way we want to run it.
Why we run on systems, not pitches
The reason every visit goes through the same digital workflow isn't because we love technology. It's because the alternative is bad for everyone.
For us, the alternative is sales. We're not good at it and we don't enjoy it. The chain-shop instinct — "find another $400 on this car before they leave" — is the reason most people don't trust shops in the first place. We didn't want to be that shop.
For you, the alternative is the runaround. "Could be the catalytic converter, but it might also be the O2 sensor, hard to say without taking it apart" — that's a shop guessing on your dime.
So we picked the systems specifically. Tekmetric — shop management software — runs the diagnostic record and the digital inspection: every finding gets a photo and a line-item price in your report. The system also pulls a CARFAX vehicle history report on every visit (past services, recalls, accident records, mileage trends) and scans the manufacturer's Service Bulletins — the technical issue notices most chain shops don't have access to — for known problems on your specific year/make/model. AutoFlow (autotext.me) handles the booking, the tap-to-approve estimate, the text updates while you wait, and pay-from-your-phone at pickup. The systems describe what the car needs. You decide what gets fixed. We charge what we quoted.
With the systems doing the describing and approving, what's left for us is the four things we're actually good at: maintenance (by the manufacturer's schedule, no padding), diagnostics (find the actual cause, not the easy guess), repair work (fix what you approved), and education if you want it. Most customers don't, and that's fine. Some do — and we'll spend an extra 10 minutes at the counter explaining why your N20 timing chain is the way it is.
What we don't do — and where we'll send you
We'd rather refer you out than do work we don't specialize in. The list:
- Wheel alignment. We do tires but not alignment — equipment we don't have. We'll point you to a nearby shop that does.
- Smog checks. We're not STAR-certified for the test itself. If you fail and need diagnostic work, that's us — bring the failure paper and we'll dig in.
- Body, collision, paint, or glass. Different trade. We'll recommend a body shop we trust.
- EV high-voltage battery work. Hybrid engine-side issues we'll handle. The high-voltage pack itself goes to the dealer or an EV specialist.
If we can't fix it (rare), we'll tell you straight up and point you somewhere good. That's the whole point — we'd rather refer you out than do work we shouldn't be doing.
