Battery Replacement in San Mateo, CA

Mobile service when we can. Stuck with a no-start in Burlingame, Foster City, or Belmont? Call us — sometimes we can come to you.

Standard flooded or AGM (BMW, Audi, MB, Porsche). OEM scan-tool registration in-house. From $149 installed.

A dead battery is the kind of thing that ends your day if you're far from a shop and stuck in a parking lot. Beacon Auto Care in San Mateo handles battery service primarily as drop-in at the shop on S El Camino. When the schedule allows and the location is workable, Moe or Hisham will sometimes drive to your car with a replacement battery — but it's not a guaranteed offering. Call first; we'll tell you honestly whether mobile is on the table that day or whether tow-in is faster.

Mobile battery service — when it works

If you're stranded with a no-start in San Mateo, Burlingame, Foster City, Belmont, or San Bruno, call before you call a tow truck — sometimes we can come out. Recent example: a customer's Mazda CX-30 with a dead battery in Burlingame — we arrived in 25 minutes, replaced the battery in 15, and had him back on the road in under an hour. That's the case where it works: short drive, clear diagnosis, in-stock battery.

When mobile makes sense: standard or AGM battery swap on a car that ran fine before the no-start (so we know it's the battery, not the alternator). When the shop is the better call: a car that died WHILE driving, intermittent stalls, or a car with multiple electrical symptoms — those need a load test on the alternator and a full diagnostic, which is shop-only. We'll be straight with you about which one you've got.

Signs your battery is on the way out

  • Slow crank in the morning. The starter labors before the engine catches. Classic late-stage battery weakness.
  • Headlights dim at idle. The alternator should keep them bright — if they fade, the battery isn't holding voltage.
  • Battery warning light on the dash. Not always the battery — could be the alternator or wiring — but always worth a load test.
  • Battery is 4+ years old. Bay Area mild climate is friendly, but most batteries don't make it past 5 years.
  • Corroded terminals. White/blue powder on the posts means the battery is venting acid; cleaning is a short-term fix, replacement is the real one.

What you get with a battery service here

  • Load test confirms it's the battery, not the alternator (we don't sell you a battery you don't need)
  • Standard flooded or AGM battery — sized to your car's spec (Group 35, 49, H6, etc.)
  • OEM registration via scan tool (BMW ISTA, MB XENTRY, Audi ODIS, Porsche PIWIS) — required on most European cars
  • Memory saver during install — radio presets, clock, seat memory preserved
  • Terminal cleaning + dielectric grease on the posts
  • 24-month battery warranty (varies by brand) — call before you replace if a warranty replacement might apply
  • Old battery recycled at no charge

Common Questions About Battery Replacement

Pricing, mobile service, European-car AGM batteries, and how to tell if it's the battery or something else.

How much does battery replacement cost in San Mateo?
Most batteries installed: from $149 for standard flooded batteries (older Hondas, Toyotas, F-series trucks). AGM batteries (most BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, modern start/stop systems) run higher because the battery itself is $250–$350 retail. Call (650) 638-1791 with your year/make/model and we'll quote the exact battery + install for your car.
Do you do mobile battery service? My car won't start.
Sometimes — when the schedule allows and the location is workable, Moe or Hisham will drive to your car with a replacement battery. It's not a guaranteed offering with set pricing; it depends on what's in the bay that hour and how far we'd be driving. Recent example (May 2026): Mazda CX-30 with a dead battery in Burlingame — we arrived in 25 minutes and had the new battery in within 15 minutes of arrival. Call (650) 638-1791 with your year/make/model and approximate location and we'll tell you honestly whether we can come out or whether tow-in is faster for you.
How do I know if it's the battery vs. the alternator vs. the starter?
Quick test: if the car starts after a jump and runs fine but won't start again later, it's almost always the battery. If it dies WHILE you're driving (lights dim, gauges flicker), the alternator is suspect. Long crank with a dragging sound and clicks usually points to the starter. Either way, we run a load test on the battery and an alternator output check on every diagnostic — confirms the actual cause before we quote a part. See our diagnostic process.
How long does a car battery last in the Bay Area?
Most car batteries last 3–5 years. Bay Area mild climate is actually battery-friendly (extreme heat and extreme cold both kill batteries faster), so 5 years isn't unusual here. AGM batteries on European cars often go 5–7 years. We test battery health on every oil change and let you know when it's drifting toward replacement — that way you don't get stuck in a parking lot.
Do European cars need special batteries?
Yes — most BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and Porsche models use AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries. AGM is more durable, handles deep discharge better, and is required for cars with start-stop systems. Substituting a standard flooded battery on an AGM car will cause charging issues and shortened life. We stock or order brand-spec batteries (BMW, MB, VW genuine, or AGM equivalents from Bosch / Interstate / DEKA). Replacement on a European car also requires a battery registration via the OEM scan tool (BMW ISTA, MB XENTRY, etc.) — we handle that in-house.
Will replacing my battery clear the radio code or reset settings?
Sometimes — older cars (pre-2010 Honda, Toyota, BMW) may need a radio code re-entered after battery disconnect, and some have window/sunroof relearn procedures. We use a memory saver during replacement to keep the car powered while the old battery is out, which preserves radio presets, clock, and seat memory on most modern cars. If your car needs a code, bring the radio-code card from the glovebox or owner's manual.
