Pre-Purchase Inspection in San Mateo, CA

Buying a used car? 60+ point check, code scan, road test, CARFAX history pulled — catch hidden problems before you hand over a check. From $149.

A used car is the second-largest purchase most people make. The seller wants to sell. The CarFax report is what they let you see. A 60-minute pre-purchase inspection is what tells you what's actually under the hood. Beacon Auto Care in San Mateo does the same digital inspection on PPI cars that we do on every customer's daily driver — full photo report delivered before you decide.

What We Inspect

  • Frame and collision evidence — panel gaps, weld signatures, paint mismatch, bent rails
  • Drivetrain — engine leaks, transmission slip, axle boots, motor mounts
  • Brakes — pad thickness, rotor condition, fluid quality
  • Suspension — struts, control arms, ball joints, tie rods, bushings
  • Tires — tread depth on each wheel, sidewall age, uneven wear
  • Fluids — engine oil, coolant, transmission, brake, power steering, differential
  • OBD-II — stored, pending, and freeze-frame codes; readiness monitors
  • Battery — load test, terminal condition
  • Road test — drivability, shifting, brakes, alignment, noises under load

What You Get

A digital inspection report on your phone with photos of every finding, severity flagged (urgent, future-attention, good), measurements where applicable (pad thickness in mm, tire tread in 32nds, fluid levels and condition), and a clear summary you can use to negotiate the asking price or walk away with eyes open.

  • Same DVI process used on regular customer cars — nothing watered-down
  • OBD-II scan + readiness monitors checked
  • Full photo report delivered by text or email — yours to keep
  • Same-day appointments available

Common Questions About Pre-Purchase Inspection

What's covered, how long, what it costs, what to expect.

What does a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) actually cover?
Full multi-point digital inspection (DVI) — same one we do on every customer car, but specifically aimed at hidden problems: frame and collision damage, drivetrain leaks, brake and suspension wear, tire condition, fluid quality, OBD-II scan with stored and pending codes, battery test, visible rust, and a road test. Photos of every finding sent to your phone or email.
How long does a PPI take?
About 60–90 minutes. We can do it same-day with an appointment. The seller brings the car (or you do); we do the inspection; you get the full digital report on your phone before deciding to buy.
How much does a pre-purchase inspection cost in San Mateo?
$149–$199 for most cars. European or exotic cars run $199–$249. Fixed price — no extras unless you ask for additional tests (compression test, leakdown, etc.).
What's the most useful thing a PPI catches?
Hidden collision repair. Frame straightening from a major impact often gets repainted and looks fine — but the structural damage shows in panel gaps, weld signatures, and computer-vision frame alignment. We've saved customers from buying salvaged cars sold as 'clean title' multiple times.
Will the seller let me bring it for inspection?
A reasonable seller will. If the seller refuses to let you do a PPI at an independent shop — that's the loudest red flag in the used-car business. Walk away. We've seen this exact pattern preceding shady title histories more times than we can count.
