Car Noise Diagnosis in San Mateo, CA

Clunk over bumps? Whine while driving? Click on turns? Stethoscope, ChassisEAR, road test — we isolate the source first. From $99.

Mystery noises are the kind of problem most shops "diagnose" by replacing whichever part is convenient. Beacon Auto Care in San Mateo uses a mechanic's stethoscope and ChassisEAR — a multi-channel listening device with mics clamped to suspected parts — to isolate the actual source on a road test. Then we photograph it.

What We Diagnose

  • Clunk over bumps — struts, control arm bushings, ball joints, stabilizer links
  • Click on turns — CV axle joints (torn boots are the giveaway)
  • Whirr at speed — wheel bearings (often pitched higher in one direction of travel)
  • Whine with RPM — accessory belt, idler pulley, alternator, water pump bearing
  • Tick from engine — exhaust manifold gasket, lifter, low oil pressure
  • Knock under load — engine internals (serious) vs spark knock (timing or fuel)
  • Squeal on cold start — serpentine belt or tensioner

Real Library of Findings

From our DVI library: torn CV axle boots on 17 vehicles, worn front struts on 23, torn control arm bushings on 20. Each finding is photographed, captioned with technician notes, and stored in our system. When we suspect one of these on your car, we know exactly what we're looking for.

  • Stethoscope + ChassisEAR + road test
  • Photo evidence of any worn part — see the issue before you spend
  • Diagnostic fee usually applies toward the repair
  • 24-month warranty on parts and labor

Common Questions About Noise Diagnosis

What we listen for, how we isolate, what it costs.

What's the most common 'mystery noise' you find?
Worn struts/shocks (clunk over bumps), torn engine mounts (clunk on shift), worn CV axle boots (clicking on turns), bad wheel bearings (whirr that changes with speed), accessory belt or pulley (whine that changes with RPM), exhaust leak (tick that fades when warm).
Where does the noise come from?
We use a mechanic's stethoscope and ChassisEAR (multi-channel listening device) to isolate. ChassisEAR clamps mics to suspected components — strut towers, control arms, drive shafts — and we listen on a road test. The mic that picks up the noise loudest is the source.
How much does noise diagnosis cost in San Mateo?
$99–$149 diagnostic fee — usually applies toward the repair. We isolate, photograph, and send our findings to your phone before quoting parts. No 'guess and replace.'
What about a clicking noise on turns?
Almost always a CV axle boot torn or CV joint worn. From a 2006 Honda Ridgeline inspection: 'CV axle boot torn' — once the grease leaks out and dirt gets in, the joint wears fast and clicks on turns. Photo went to the customer's phone. Axle replacement: $400–$650 per side.
What about a clunk over bumps?
Could be: worn struts/shocks, torn control arm bushing, broken stabilizer link, or worn ball joint. We have suspension findings on dozens of vehicles in our DVI library — these are some of the most-photographed parts. We'll show you what we see.
