Hybrid Repair in San Mateo, CA

Prius · Camry Hybrid · Lexus · Insight · Hyundai · Ford. Real hybrid expertise — engine-side issues we handle. High-voltage battery work goes to the dealer or EV specialist (we'll tell you straight).

Hybrid cars are mostly conventional cars on the gas-side, with a high-voltage battery and motor system layered in. Beacon Auto Care in San Mateo handles the conventional side (oil, brakes, suspension, AC, scheduled maintenance) plus hybrid-specific items: inverter coolant, 12V aux battery, hybrid diagnostic codes. For high-voltage battery replacement, we're upfront about what we take on and what we refer.

Hybrid Models We Service

  • Toyota — Prius (all gens), Camry Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Prius V/C
  • Lexus — ES 300h/350h, RX 450h/500h, NX, UX, CT200h, GS 450h
  • Honda — Insight, Civic Hybrid, Accord Hybrid, CR-V Hybrid
  • Hyundai / Kia — Sonata Hybrid, Ioniq, Kona Hybrid, Niro
  • Ford — C-Max, Fusion Hybrid, Escape Hybrid, Maverick Hybrid

Hybrid-Specific Services

  • Inverter coolant service — separate cooling loop from engine coolant
  • 12V auxiliary AGM battery testing + replacement — the usual cause of a hybrid that won't power up
  • Hybrid system diagnostic codes via OEM scan tool
  • Regen-compatible brake pad service
  • High-voltage battery health check (capacity vs spec)
  • Traction-battery cooling fan cleaning — a clogged fan overheats the HV pack and gets misdiagnosed as a dead battery
  • Hybrid coolant pump / inverter pump testing

Conventional service on your hybrid: oil change, brakes, AC service.

Common Questions About Hybrid Service

Brands, warranty, what we do, what we refer.

What hybrids do you service?

Toyota Prius (all generations), Camry Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Prius V, Prius C. Lexus ES Hybrid (300h/350h), RX Hybrid (450h/500h), NX Hybrid, UX Hybrid, CT200h. Honda Insight, Civic Hybrid, Accord Hybrid. Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Ioniq, Kona Hybrid. Ford C-Max, Fusion Hybrid, Escape Hybrid. Recent hybrids serviced: 2022 Toyota Prius, 2011 Toyota Prius, 2013 Lexus ES-300h, 2013 Lexus RX450h, 2017 Lexus RX350.

What's different about servicing a hybrid?

The gas-engine side is mostly the same as a conventional car (oil changes, brake service, AC, suspension). The differences: regen-friendly brake pads, hybrid inverter coolant service (separate from engine coolant), 12V auxiliary battery failure modes, high-voltage battery diagnostics (limited scope — see next FAQ), and hybrid-specific diagnostic codes.

Do you work on the high-voltage battery?

We diagnose hybrid battery health via OEM scan tool — cell balance, individual module voltage, expected vs actual capacity. For replacement, we work with a hybrid-battery specialist partner who handles the actual pack rebuild or swap on Toyota / Lexus / Honda small-pack hybrids; we coordinate the diagnosis, removal, and reinstallation, they handle the high-voltage rebuild. Large-pack PHEVs and full EVs go to brand specialists or the dealer. We're upfront about what stays in-house vs what we partner on.

How does pricing compare to the dealer?

Most hybrid services run meaningfully less than dealer pricing — typical savings depend on the job and which dealer you compare against. Where we save money: oil changes, brake service, suspension, AC, scheduled maintenance. Where the dealer is the better fit: warranty work covered under the hybrid powertrain warranty (most Toyotas: 100k miles / 10 years), or a high-voltage battery replacement on a fairly new vehicle. Bring a dealer estimate and we'll show you the line-by-line difference.

What about brake service on hybrids?

Hybrid brake pads typically last longer than conventional cars because regenerative braking does most of the slowing. We measure pad thickness on every visit; sometimes we're seeing 7-8mm of pad at 80k miles. The brake fluid still needs flushing on the same 2-year/30k-mile interval — fluid degradation is unrelated to brake pad wear.
