Cabin Air Filter Replacement in San Mateo, CA

Pollen, dust, wildfire smoke — the filter you breathe through. Photo of the saturated old filter sent to your phone. From $45 installed.

Most drivers don't know they have a cabin air filter — and most have never replaced one. At Beacon Auto Care in San Mateo, we visually check it during multi-point inspections. If it's clogged with debris, we'll pull it out, photograph it, and send the photo to your phone. The before/after photo speaks for itself.

Signs You Need a New Cabin Filter

  • Weak airflow from vents even at max fan speed
  • Musty smell from the AC, especially after the car's been sitting
  • Pollen / allergy symptoms in the car that don't happen elsewhere
  • Visible debris in the filter — leaves, twigs, dust mat
  • Last replacement > 15,000 miles ago or unknown

Real Inspection Note

From a recent inspection: "Cabin Air Filter — Dirty with debris. Cabin Air Filters provide clean air and protect HVAC system components from contaminants." Photo went to the customer's phone. The before-photo was a wall of brown debris; the after-photo was fresh white pleated material. They felt the airflow difference within minutes of pickup.

  • Visual filter check on every multi-point inspection — no extra charge
  • Photo of the saturated filter sent to your phone with the quote
  • OEM-equivalent or genuine OEM filters — including HEPA-grade options
  • Most installs done in 15–30 minutes

Often paired with our auto AC service — if your AC is weak, the filter is the cheapest first thing to check.

Common Questions About Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Replacement timing, cost, weak AC airflow, and musty smells.

What does the cabin air filter do?
It cleans the air coming into the cabin through your AC and heater vents — pollen, dust, road grime, and (with HEPA-grade filters) some particulates. A clogged filter reduces airflow from your vents, can cause musty smells, and makes your AC work harder.
How often should I replace the cabin air filter?
Every 15,000–25,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first. Bay Area pollen seasons (spring) and wildfire smoke (late summer / fall) age them faster. We visually check it during multi-point inspections — if it's loaded with debris, we'll show you the photo.
How much does cabin air filter replacement cost in San Mateo?
Installed: $45–$95 depending on the car. Most domestic and Asian sedans are on the lower end. European cars and some SUVs require dash disassembly to access the filter — those run higher.
My AC vents are weak — could it be the cabin filter?
Often, yes. A saturated filter restricts airflow before it reaches the blower. If you're getting half the airflow you remember, the filter is the cheapest first-thing-to-check. We'll pull and photograph it before recommending anything more expensive.
Can a dirty cabin filter cause musty smells?
Yes — especially if moisture has gotten into the filter and started growing mold. Replacing the filter usually fixes it. If the smell persists after replacement, the evaporator core may need cleaning (separate service, $89–$149).
